How to use the Social Media Character Counter
Type your post in the box. The platform board at the top shows the live count against every major platform at once, with the truncation point each one shows before a See more. The composition panel underneath breaks the post into body, hashtags, mentions and URLs, with separate counts so a post that only fits because hashtags were counted as body is a post that will not fit.
Pick the URL handling toggle to switch between counting URLs as written and counting them as X does (a fixed 23 characters regardless of length). The Custom limit field at the top covers any platform not in the list, or a client’s own house rule.
Why does the truncation point matter as much as the hard limit?
Most platforms hide everything past a certain point behind a See more, and that point is the one that decides whether the post works. A 250-character LinkedIn post fits, but only the first 140 characters on mobile are visible without a click. The platform board reports both numbers so you can choose.
Why is the X URL mode a fixed 23 characters?
X shortens every link to a t.co URL that counts as 23 characters regardless of the original length. The toggle lets you switch between “as written” and “X’s count” so a post that does not fit by the link length will not fit when posted.
What does the emoji count warn about?
Emoji outside the Basic Multilingual Plane (most skin-tone modifiers, family emoji, flags) are counted as single characters here. Some platforms and some tools count them differently. The tool reports how many you have and warns when any character is outside the BMP.
