Em Dash Remover
Replaces every em dash in your text with a hyphen, a comma, a space or nothing, and shows each one in context before it changes. Handles the family of lookalike characters people forget: en dash, horizontal bar, figure dash, minus sign, and the double hyphen.
Found 0 dash characters
Each occurrence is shown below with 40 characters of context. Click Keep to exclude a single instance from the replacement (e.g. a deliberate em dash you want to keep).
How to use the Em Dash Remover
Paste your text, pick what you want the dashes replaced with, and the tool lists every occurrence with 40 characters of context on each side. The dash is highlighted in red so it cannot be missed.
The default replacement is a hyphen, which is the closest single-character alternative. If you are pasting into prose, “spaced hyphen” reads the most naturally. If you want to clean an AI reply, replacing with a comma or with nothing often works better than a hyphen.
Why is an em dash in AI text a thing?
Modern instruction-tuned models overuse the em dash as a paragraph break. Cleaning the em dashes out of a long model reply is a quick way to make it read more like a person wrote it. That said, an em dash is a normal punctuation mark, and removing every em dash will not make text undetectable as AI output. The tool says so in a one-line note at the top of the output.
How do I keep one specific em dash?
Click the “Keep” toggle on the row in the context list. The kept occurrence is excluded from the replacement; everything else is changed.
What about dashes in URLs or code?
By default, dashes inside URLs, code blocks and email-like strings are skipped, and the count of skipped occurrences is reported. Turn the option off if you want a thorough sweep.
